Why This Matters

Feature text

Libraries are where opportunity begins — for children learning to read, teens discovering who they are, adults building new skills, and seniors staying active and connected. They are one of the last truly public places where everyone is welcome, where learning is free, and where community comes to life.
This vote is about protecting our local system — Fort Vancouver Regional Libraries (see locations here ) — which serves hundreds of thousands across Southwest Washington with access, resources, and support that make a real difference in people’s lives every day.
Yes, it’s about books — books that teach, inspire, and open doors — but it’s also about so much more. It’s about the storytime that sparks a child’s imagination, the internet access that helps someone apply for a job, the quiet space to study, the welcoming programs that bring neighbors together, and the resources that meet people right where they are.
Without this vote, we risk losing much of what makes our libraries so essential — reduced hours, fewer programs, and cutbacks that hurt the very people who need them most. By voting yes, we’re saying we believe in access, opportunity, and the power of learning—for everyone.
Please join us in voting Yes for Libraries. Yes for Fort Vancouver Regional Libraries. Yes on Prop 1.

Why support this

1

Keeping Libraries Strong for Everyone

Prop 1 protects the core services our communities count on: books, programs, public computers, job help, and safe spaces for all ages.

2

Costs Are Rising — Support Hasn’t

It’s been 15 years since the last increase. Costs have gone up - but funding hasn’t.

3

96% of Library Funding Is on the Line

This levy funds 96% of the library’s operating budget. Without it, serious cuts begin in 2026.

A YES vote means

  • More open hours and staff
  • Expanded programs for kids, families, and seniors
  • Up-to-date technology and more books

A NO vote means

  • Major cuts to hours, staff, and programs
  • Fewer new materials and longer wait times
  • Closed branches and canceled community projects

Libraries don’t ask for much.
But they give back so much more.

During Covid I rediscovered many of the digital resources at the library, but Kanopy was a special treat that gave me access to thought provoking feature films and documentaries you can’t find on Netflix.

My Library Is… opportunity for my students
I’ve watched so many of my students—and their parents—learn English with library resources. It’s more than just language skills. It’s confidence, connection, and the chance to build a better future together.

My Library Is… a fresh start
After I got out of the military, I wasn’t sure what was next. The library gave me a place to figure things out—job search help, computer access, even a quiet corner to think. It was exactly what I needed at the time.

Top 10 FAQs About the Fort Vancouver Regional Libraries Vote

    What is this vote about?

It’s about keeping our libraries strong—restoring support so Fort Vancouver Regional Libraries can continue to serve over 550,000 people and grow with our community’s needs.

    When is the vote?

Election Day is Tuesday, August 5, 2025, with ballots mailed out in mid-July to all registered voters in the library district.

Is this the same rate we approved before?

Yes. This simply restores the original rate voters approved in 2010. It’s not a new fee—it brings us back in line with what the library used to receive.

    What will this funding do?

It means more open hours, better access to books and materials, expanded digital tools, and more outreach—especially to growing and underserved areas.

    How much does it cost?

For a home assessed at $400,000 (district average), the cost is about $16.67 per month—less than the price of one new book, but it funds thousands of them for everyone.

What happens if it doesn’t pass?

Starting in 2026, the library will face major cuts: fewer hours, fewer staff, fewer books, and reduced services across the region.

I don’t use the library much—why should I vote yes?

Because someone you know depends on it. Libraries help kids learn, adults find jobs, seniors stay connected, and communities stay informed and supported.

Will this support physical books too?

Absolutely. Books and reading are the heart of what we do—and this keeps our shelves full, our wait times shorter, and our collections growing.

Why does the library need more support now?

Library costs—books, staff, programs, and technology—have gone up, but funding hasn’t changed in over 15 years. This vote helps us keep up and move forward.
